Gillett Library History
by: Marie Dorrow
Every accomplishment starts with a dream. So it was with the members of the Gillett Woman's Club when the time came to relax from the demands of WWI. They stopped knitting and crocheting scarves, socks, mittens and caps, and the binding of bandages and thought about improving their own corner of the world. They dreamt that their small group, without funds or skills in organizing a library, could establish one in the community that would grow and become a reral blessing to the Village of Gillett and it's surrounding community. Fate has a way augmenting and creating the necessary ingredients to allow good dreams to come true.Following the war, soldier Stanley Korotev of Gillett met and married a charming lady who was a librarian in Jamaica, New York. Suddenly the Woman's Club had someone with the training, knowledge and skill to establish the library. The hunt for a suitable location began. The fire station and jail on the cornor of Main and McKenzie Streets had a second story with two large rooms. The Woman's Club requested and received permission for the use of the vacant room in the rear of the building. Citizens donated tables, bookshelves, desk and chairs, as well as books. Mrs. Korotev cataloged the books and issued library cards. Soon many patrons climbed the stairs on Wednesday or Saturday afternoons or evenings to withdraw a free book or select a rental one at a rate of 5 cents per day.In 1926, the Village Board appointed Mrs. Korotev Librarian. The Woman's CLub raised her small salary. Mrs. Eunice Garrison served as substitute. On January 4, 1935, the Village Board appointed a Library Board: Otto Neumann, Mrs. A.G. Sack, Russell Pederson, Mrs. J. Helf and Mrs. Korotev. They appointed Eunice Garrison Librarian at the salary of $12.50 a month, with the additional responsibility of providing necessary janitorial services. She had $3.00 a month to spend for postcards, stamps, etc. Various civic organizations and businesses donated money to purchase books, which Mrs. Garrison and Mrs. Korotev selected.Mrs. Garrison retired in December 31, 1946. Mrs. WIlliam John accepted the position next, but resigned in 1948. Emma Larson accepted the job at $30.00 a month and served for many years. Sarah (Sally) Owens succeeded Mrs. Larson, In turn, Betty Chambers, Ruth Warner, Helen Bergner and Ginny Raddatz served as Librarian. Through the years, staff increased to include assistants and aides. Today Alice Gudowicz serves as Librarian, assisted by Leone Christensen and aides Marge Pemrich and Lena Severson. After the VIllage of Gillett incorporated, the city built a new City Hall and Fire Station in Zipple Park. Plans to remodel the newly vacated building on Main and McKenzie included an addition to bring the library down to ground level for easier access. The library moved into it's addition in the mid 1950's. Use of the new facility grew steadily. The new library joins all Oconto County Libraries in the Nicolet Library system and serves the people of Gillett more completely than ever. It offers more space, adequete shelving, a large collection, automatic card catalogs, quite reading and study areas, larger restrooms, handy parking, accessability for the handicapped and new services for children and adults. Many dedicated people worked hard to raise donations from the prople of GIllett and the surrounding area and even from former Gillett residents to make the new dream a reality. |
